Luis Muñoz Rivera Park, built in 1928, is named after a turn-of-the-century Puerto Rican statesman. Located on 26 acres in Puerta de Tierra, at the entrance to Old San Juan, Luis Muñoz Rivera Park is the most historic in the chain of parks managed by the trust for the Development, Operation and Conservation of the State Parks of Puerto Rico, or as it is known in Spanish, the "Fideicomiso de Parques".
The park was a key part of the military defense of San Juan during Puerto Rico's days as a Spanish colony. The park bridged the three forts - El Morro, San Cristobal and San Gerónimo - that guarded the islet of San Juan. The defense line ensured that San Juan never fell to invaders during the 400 years of Spanish occupation in Puerto Rico. The Polvorín, or ammunition hut, was an integral link in this chain of defense. The structure, in the process of restoration, will house a center for artistic exhibitions. The open air Peace Pavilion, which seats more than 1,500 persons, is used for social, civic, educational and recreational activities. Administrative Office and Public Use facilities: Under restoration. When finished, these two offices will serve to operate and maintain Luis Muñoz Park. On the second floor will be an outdoor café that will be open to the public. Recreational Areas: These are gardens, fountains, children's games, walking paths and benches for a relaxing afternoon. As part of the development of the park , the Park Trust is finishing a five-stage restoration project. The restoration is all the more important, because in addition to years of deterioration, the park suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
Luis Muñoz Rivera Park is managed by the Park Trust. The Trust was created in 1988 by the Puerto Rican government to safeguard the island's natural heritage. Along with Muñoz Rivera, the Trust administers Luis Muñoz Marin Park, Julio Enrique Monagas Park, Laguna del Condado Park, Plaza la Libertad, Enrique Martí Coll Lineal Park, Plaza las Nereidas and Río Camuy Cave Park.
